SUMMARY:ATTACCA QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:GET TICKETSThe two-time GRAMMY® Award-winning Attacca Quartet is recognized and acclaimed as one of the most versatile and outstanding ensembles of the moment — a true quartet for modern times. \nThe concert is followed by a reception where you can meet the artists.\nAll are encouraged to attend. \nThis concert is generously sponsored by Doris and David May \nProgram\nArr: Attacca Quartet\nNocturne originally written by a composer such as Poulenc or Chopin \nDavid Lang\ndaisy \nBéla Bartók\nString Quartet No. 4 \nI N T E R M I S S I O N \nFelix Mendelssohn\nString Quartet No. 4 in E minor\, Op. 44\, No. 2 \nProgram Notes\nWhen curating this program\, and thinking upon the term “nocturne\,” particularly as it applies to the string quartet\, a few threads emerge. From its inception as simply music played later at night\, the “nocturne” progresses through the pianistic hands of John Field and Frederic Chopin to rest in crepuscular disquiet within the quartets of Béla Bartók. His 4th Quartet\, from 1929\, features a central movement replete with the “night music” for which he would become known. Nodding our hats to the tradition of French nocturnes\, we feature arrangements by Amy Schroeder of Poulenc and Debussy\, charming colorful evocations of nocturnal moods and passions. The most abstract\, or perhaps most dramatic sense of night\, can be found in David Lang’s “daisy\,” which we present in its United States premiere tour. This piece takes simple material and subjects it to the forces of night and day: the “first daisy” seeks to destroy this material\, while the “second daisy” rather attempts to nurture it to a place of humanity. To round out the program\, we have the stormy and Puckish Quartet Op. 44 No. 2 in e minor of Felix Mendelssohn\, featuring an appropriately Shakespearean scherzo full of whimsy and mischief. \nDomenic Salerni\, July 3\, 2025 \nAbout the Artist\nTwo-time GRAMMY-award winning ATTACCA QUARTET\, as described by The Nation\, “lives in the present aesthetically\, without rejecting the virtues of the musical past”\, and are recognized and acclaimed as one of the most versatile and outstanding ensembles of the moment — a true quartet for modern times. Gliding through traditional classical repertoire to electronica\, video game music and contemporary collaborations\, they are one of the world’s most innovative and respected ensembles. \nPassionate advocates of contemporary repertoire\, the quartet are dedicated to presenting and recording new works. Their two releases ‘Orange’ and ‘Evergreen’ in collaboration with Caroline Shaw won the 2020 and 2023 GRAMMY awards for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance. \nIn 2021\, the quartet announced their signing to SONY Classical\, releasing two albums\, ‘Real Life’ and ‘Of All Joys’\, that embody their range as a contemporary quartet at home in the studio and on stage. ‘Real Life’ explores collaborations with leading electronica artists like TOKiMONSTA\, Dedalus\, and Squarepusher\, and ‘Of All Joys’ unites the music of the Renaissance with modern minimalist giants Philip Glass and Arvo Pärt. \nThe quartet continue to perform in the world’s best venues and festivals\, with highlights including Lincoln Center\, Carnegie Hall\, Sala Sao Paolo\, SFJazz\, Paris’ Théâtre de la Ville\, Palau de la Musica\, Concertgebouw Bruges\, De Doelen\, Kings Place\, and Amsterdam’s String Quartet Biennale. \nATTACCA QUARTET was formed at the Juilliard School by Amy Schroeder and Andrew Yee in 2003. \nhttps://www.attaccaquartet.com/
