For nearly 30 years\, the GRAMMY®-nominated quartet has performed on the world’s most prestigious concert stages\, earning accolades from critics and audiences alike. Based in Austin\, TX\, and thriving on the area’s storied music scene\, the Miró takes pride in finding new ways to communicate with audiences of all backgrounds while cultivating the longstanding tradition of chamber music. Miró Quartet’s recent and upcoming projects include a touring and recording project with pianist Lara Downes titled Here on Earth\, featuring musical depictions of our planet\, its evolution\, and the lives of its inhabitants; the premiere of a new version of Kevin Puts’ Credo with the Naples Philharmonic; and collaborations with composers Steven Banks\, Tamar-Kali\, and Gabriel Kahane\, as well as soprano Karen Slack. Having independently released many celebrated recordings for a variety of global labels\, the Miró Quartet was nominated for a 2025 GRAMMY® Award for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance for its second album on Pentatone\, Home\, featuring two new commissions by Kevin Puts and Caroline Shaw\, as well as works by George Walker and Samuel Barber. \nIt was nominated for a 2024 GRAMMY® Award for Best Choral Performance for House of Belonging\, created in collaboration with Austin-based choral group Conspirare. The quartet recently produced an Emmy Award-winning audiovisual multimedia project titled Transcendence\, a documentary centered around a performance of Franz Schubert’s Quartet in G Major on rare Stradivarius instruments\, available on livestream\, CD\, and Blu-ray. Formed in 1995\, the Miró Quartet was awarded first prize at several national and international competitions including the Banff International String Quartet Competition and the Naumburg Chamber Music Competition. Deeply committed to music education\, members of the Quartet have given master classes at universities and conservatories throughout the world\, and since 2003 has served as the quartet-in-residence at the University of Texas at Austin Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music. In 2005\, the Quartet became the first ensemble ever to be awarded the coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant. The Miró Quartet took its name and its inspiration from the Spanish artist Joan Miró\, whose Surrealist works — with subject matter drawn from the realm of memory\, dreams\, and imaginative fantasy — are some of the most groundbreaking\, influential\, and admired of the 20th century.

In May 2024\, Poiesis joined the Concert Artists Guild roster for North American management as winners of the Louis and Susan Meisel Competition. \nDerived from ancient Greek (ποιεῖν)\, the word Poiesis means “to make”; specifically\, to create something that has never existed before. With a focus on expanding the string quartet repertoire with vibrant new works by emerging composers\, the Poiesis Quartet infuses each performance with unique moments of synchronicity and verve. Their 2024 debut album ‘as we are’ on the Bright Shiny Things label\, which features world premiere recordings with mezzo-soprano Nancy Maultsby\, was lauded for the quartet’s “bottomless depth” (Cleveland Classical). Having had presented several world premieres of works by composers including Brian Raphael Nabors\, Kitty Brazelton\, and Cara Haxo\, their commission of String Quartet No. 7 ‘Surfacing’ by Chinese-Canadian composer Kevin Lau received its world premiere at the Chautauqua Institution in 2025. As graduates of Oberlin College & Conservatory\, they were previously mentored by Sibbi Bernhardsson of the Pacifica Quartet and members of the Verona Quartet. As a multi-faceted ensemble\, in addition to their performance degrees from Oberlin\, members of the quartet also individually received formal education in disciplines such as chemistry\, comparative American studies\, feminist studies\, baroque\, and jazz. When not playing chamber music\, Poiesis loves to learn new languages\, share ice cream cakes\, and take long walks on the beach.

The centerpiece of this project is Barnatan’s breathtaking new piano arrangement of the Symphonic Dances\, due to be published by Boosey & Hawkes in October 2025. Barnatan’s acclaimed discography also includes a two-volume set of Beethoven’s complete piano concertos\, recorded with Alan Gilbert and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields on Pentatone. In its review\, BBC Music Magazine wrote “The central strength of this first installment of Inon Barnatan’s piano concertos cycle is that\, time and again\, it puts you in touch with that feeling of ongoing wonderment.”  In 2021 he released his Time-Traveler Suite album on Pentatone\, a program that merged Baroque movements by Bach\, Handel\, Rameau and Couperin with movements by Ravel\, Ligeti\, Barber and Thomas Adès\, culminating in Brahms’ Variations on a theme by Handel. He has also released a live recording of Messiaen’s 90-minute masterpiece Des canyons aux étoiles (“From the Canyons to the Stars”)\, in which he played the exceptionally challenging solo piano part at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. In 2015 he released Rachmaninov & Chopin: Cello Sonatas on Decca Classics with Alisa Weilerstein\, earning rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. As a duo\, Barnatan and Weilerstein have also released Beethoven Cello Sonatas (2022) and Brahms Cello Sonatas (2024) on Pentatone. His solo recording of Schubert’s late piano sonatas on Avie won praise from such publications as Gramophone and BBC Music\, while his account of the great A-major Sonata (D. 959) was chosen by BBC Radio 3 as one of the all-time best recordings of the piece. His 2012 album\, Darknesse Visible\, debuted in the Top 25 on the Billboard Traditional Classical chart\, and was named BBC Music’s “Instrumentalist CD of the Month” and won a coveted place on the New York Times’ “Best of 2012” list. Barnatan gave solo recitals at Celebrity Series of Boston\, Seattle’s Benaroya Hall\, and London’s Southbank Centre\, and made his debut at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall. His musical education connects him to some of the 20th century’s most illustrious pianists and teachers: he studied first with Professor Victor Derevianko\, a student of the Russian master Heinrich Neuhaus\, before moving to London in 1997 to study at the Royal Academy of Music with Christopher Elton and Maria Curcio\, a student of the legendary Artur Schnabel.
